New technology

TVS brings in new technology for better economy in scooter:

TVS Motor, which lost its position as the third-biggest two wheeler firm in the country to Honda Motorcycle in November sales, on Wednesday said it has developed a new technology common for both scooters and motorcycles with a promise to offer 20 per cent higher fuel efficiency in scooters when compared with conventional engines.

The move also underscores the two-wheeler maker’s intent to be more competitive in the scooter segment where customers often complain of poor fuel efficiency.

The company is expected to roll out a new scooter, the first product to sport its new technology called TVS Automatic Transmission, which employs a automatic transmission in the place of conventional one by 2013. “This will offer 20 per cent improved fuel economy when compared with conventional technology with significant reduction in exhaust emissions,” Harne Vinay Chandrakant, president – new product development, TVS Motor said.

At present, engine technology is totally different for scooters and bikes and though scooters are convenient to ride, their fuel economy is about 30 per cent lower than motorbikes.

While a scooter fitted with this new engine will offer higher fuel economy, a motorcycle sporting this engine will not have clutch and gear could be changed with the touch of an electronic button, or can be switched to automatic transmission mode, which will select the gear ratios as per the riding conditions, according to Chandrakant.

When asked about pricing of the product sporting the new engines, the company indicated that the new technology, which will be lighter by 5 kg than exiting ones, would be purely for improving the performance of its two wheelers and the prices would be determined based on prevailing market conditions.

Recently, the company had introduced an auto-clutch 110 cc bike – Jive in the market. Chandrakant said the company has been working on developing new engine technology over the past 6 to 7 years and has involved several universities and consultants in these development activities. “The new technology can be fitted across product platforms such as scooters, motorcycles, step-throughs and we will deploy these new engines on a number of upcoming models starting with a Scooter in 2013,” he added.
